What Fossils can you find at Spittal Quarry

(Dunrobin Castle with the foreshore below)
(Inside the Quarry) - 2003

Fish at Spittal Quarry are much more rare than those of the neighboring Achanarras quarry even though, those Achanarras is a disused and over collected site. The beds here are different than Achanarras and much harder. You will need heavy tools. The fish are blue tinted and can be found in the fine layered slabs, which are think yellow and black about 2mm thick. On our trip in 2003, we did find a fish head but this was buried between two giant slabs which made it both impossible to photo or collect. If you can directly find the layer from the quarry floor, you would have a much higher chance of finding many more fish, but this particular layer is not worked on since it is not of the quality that the quarry workers are looking for, this is why most of the fish will be found from the spoil heaps and not from the quarry floor.
